and back to some stitching...

still cutting up the blue and white dress and using the cloth in other projects. this second project is a bag made from some cotton cow fabric ( i was into cows lots of years back), an old, faded flannel shirt and the blue and white cloth. i used the plackets of the flannel shirt for the top closure (an idea from Jude Hill) and for the inner layer of the bag to give it more body. the strips of seams cut from the shirt were stitched together and made a perfect handle. the fat seams gave it some added body. the shirt pocket is on the inside of the bag, as well as a bit of lace to slip in a note or card...this was a fun project. click on the images for close-ups.

flannel stitched in between the outside and the lining to give the bag body.

a flannel pocket and a pocket made from a bit of lace

the front

the back

a bit of weaving and stitch as embellishment

just the collar and sleeves remain of the flannel shirt
loved using what i had on hand to construct this bag. wonder what i can make with the collar and sleeves...

Great re-use of materials that!

Your bag is so fun and creative! Perhaps a shrug from the sleeves and collar?

it came out really great. the cow fabric looks like fun to work with - playful. you've been busy - must be the weather. winter has the same affect - indoor activity. jude did use the collar for something - i think...but the sleeve can be ripped open and knowing you - magic will happen. looks like a very useful item for sure and the embellish - well, really works - with the patch and all.

The bag looks so good, well done you. Now the picture of the sleeve immediately suggested one of those gathered hanging things to put supermarket carrier bags in and then pull one from the bottom when you need it, boring but useful.

Based on your success with the rest of it, I'm sure you'll think of something!

Love how you used different fabrics in the bags. Now you could make hanging planters from the left over sleeves.

Great bag!! I remember that cow print from back in the day :) My mom wanted to come back as a dairy cow...just stand around and eat! The flannel looks soooo soft! I love your use of red thread to accent. Beautiful.

No doubt, as someone has already said you'll find a fine use for the sleeves and collar. This bag is such an enjoyable "collaboration" between all these wonderful fabrics and bits! I love fabrics and bits.. Aa my "thing" has been felting/nuno felting and not sewing but I am enjoying seeing what emerges with the sewing and stitching aspect your work inspires, Deanna!

the bag is adorable, but the name cotton cow fabric fabric gave me a good chuckle.

what fun! such a sweet little bag! i could so see a shrug of some sort being made from those sleeves and collar! add a little cloth with a stretch to it across the shoulders and there you are! or...perhaps separate the sleeves and slip them under the short sleeves of a different top...maybe even add the collor...and instant layered look without the bulk! i do this with t-shirts all the time... so many possibilities! have fun!

What a great bag Deanna. I love how you used your flannel shirt and blue and white dress. My daughters nickname is meggy moo moo so I have an affinity with cows too. :)

very lovely...especially that little piece of cloth weaving. I have to say that I love your cloth profile pic on typepad it's gorgeous and I also think I have sorted out the comment thing, thanks for that.

Your bag is wonderful, each component with its own story but the pièce de résistance (for me) is the lace pocket! And I like the woven patch on the front with red stitching, too.
