Beet dyeing and 2 more steamed bundles

I did some beet dyeing yesterday and was disappointed that only the wool really turned a dark color. All fabrics were treated with alum before dyeing. Wool always seems to do the best in picking up the dye.
I also made 2 small bundles of leaves from a small rose bush. One bundle was with dupioni silk (which turned out the best) and one with muslin. The bundles were steamed for about 90 minutes and then put in a covered jar for 24 hours. Click on the photos for close-ups.

The rose leaves one turned out great. I hope you are happy with it. Some doesn't turn out well, but you can always over dye them. I'm steaming away at the moment and will put them in a jar soon. Do you have to wait until it cool first? Enjoy your Sunday - Hugs Nat

These are so pretty. I especially like the rose leaves on silk.

Do you think that the embroidery on the beetrooted linens has become more noticeable? I am liking them! That rose leaves on the dupioni came out beautifully.

The silk rose leaved print is wonderful. Much harder to get same result in cotton. Looking forward to one day using silk to get deeper imprints and richer colors. Deanna, one of the things that I learned via trial and error, (lots of errors) is that when I worked with materials that give off a reddish color, if I used vinegar instead of alum, I got deeper reds. Something to do with the alkaline nature of alum, tends to lean toward the blue spectrum in the color wheel.
