embellishing a shirt/jacket...

i've had this shirt for several years and hardly ever wear it. i decided to embellish it and hopefully will wear it as a jacket. all this started as a project in jude's contemporary boro class. i've used a crocheted doily that my grandmother made, some tatting on the placket that was given to me as a gift when i retired 10 years ago and some tatting samples that i made when i was trying to practice my tatting after not having tatted in over 35 years. i also used a vintage doily, that i picked up some place along the way, as a kind of label. the doily appeared to me as a field of trees as they would appear from up above...and as luck would have it is made up of 7 rings which is a number i have hooked onto. click on the images for a closer view.

the jacket front

crochet and tatted embellishments

vintage buttons

hand dyed cloth and some lace

a kind of dramatic label on the inside

i do plan on doing some patchwork embellishing on the back. the problem is to find a way to do it without all the stitching showing on the inside...thinking...thinking... hopefully i'll solve that problem and will be back with more pics sometime soon.

hope you're all having a grand weekend. the weather is just beautiful here in austin.

Deanna, your jacket is going to be beautiful. I love the doily of trees. As I worked on my jacket, I had intended on lining it. As I progressed, I began to like the patterning of the stitches on the inside. I started hiding the thread knots and long stitches between areas between the base cloth and the outer cloth. The inside now looks like a confetti party of threads. ;) Enjoy stitching!

Deanna this is wonderful! I like the suggestion off Jeannie or perhaps you could carefully stitch through the outer layer without piercing the lining.....catching your threads between the two pieces of cloth....

This is lovely. Love the hand dyed lace and the tatting. We tried to learn from my grandmother but always came away with a shuttle full of knots. i'm impressed after so long : )

Interlace something into the stitching on the inside to make the finished garment reversible!

thanks to those of you have made suggestions. given the buttons on the one shoulder, don't think it would be practical to have this reversible but that's a good idea for a different jacket.

The colors, textures, and embellishments make me want to reach out to the screen and touch it! Fantastic label. I'm eager to see what you do with the back.

I like what you have done and the colors you used as well. Nice touch with doily on the shoulder. I am stitching on my sweatshirt jacket and the stitches show on the inside as it is unlined. I kind of like the stitching on the inside, I do try and hide the knots and clip all the tails. Looking good, Girlie!

Deanna~ This is looking gorgeous! I love how all the different pieces, from so many places come together so well. Love the label too :)

Hi - this is coming along nicely. Beautiful handwork. For the back, why not stitch something up separately, then use the invisible stitch to attach it to the jacket, a-la-jude. This way you don't have to do a lining and you wouldn't have all the back side showing. I know it can be neat to have the back show too, but I got the idea that you didn't want it in this case.

thanks, Janet. good idea. the only reason i don't want the stitches to show on the inside is because of that huge doily i used as a label.

Deanna, it's perfect already and you're not even finished. All these components coming together is just magical. And so beautiful. I love it.

It is just beautiful. Especially the different techniques. Because of the colors all fit so well together.

I love this idea! You've prompted me to revisit my old painting shirt that has been walnut dyed for months now --- and I have barely touched it. Your idea of giving new life to old treasures, buttons, etc makes us smile :o)

Maybe you could attach back panel by stitching consciously from inside, following form of doily? Somehow? Anyway, I love the inclusions of lace and buttons... so nice, Deanna!

thank you all for all your great advice. i've just started working on the back. i'm going to make it a separate piece and then carefully stitch it to the back with beige colored thread. so far that's the plan.

my favorite part is the cuffs, with their yes & no & stitching highlighting the dyeing.
