we need a miracle or some magic...

Went out early this morning to do some yard work and was very sad to find this skeleton of a frog. There just isn't any water around for all the little creatures. Heard a news report that shelters are taking in baby squirrels and hand feeding them because they are being abandoned by their moms for lack of food and water. I try to keep some water out in the yard but it evaporates very quickly in temperatures over 100 degrees. It's day 42 of over 100 degree weather and not a drop of rain here at my house in over a month. There is a glimmer of hope of some rain this weekend. I need to conjure up some magic.

i can see the suffering in the expression

just a skeleton

I have those plastic trays you put under pots that are pretty shallow, and measure about 12-15" across and I fill two of them up every day. Birds are afraid of water if they can't see the bottom easily.

You wouldn't believe the number of birds that use it to drink and bathe in every day, plus squirrels are always coming to get drinks.
It's very hot & dry here in NC, too, not good for gardens, either.

the poor creatures! Poor humans, too. Even if you live in a place where heat is the norm it still gets to a point where enough is enough.

Oh Deanna! the poor frog in your yard. We went through drought for over 10 years, but now it's broken thanks goodness. We actually have too much rain this year! Yes some magic we need please...

Death in the natural world is always sad. And that there is a lack of water, alarming. Last Summer in a drought, my MA. friend ran her hose all the way to the dry brook to keep the fish alive (and the frogs).....If you have the where withal, you might dig a pond, sink a shallow pool and keep it filled till the crisis passes. Meanwhile take a river walk with Terri Windling at http://windling.typepad.com/blog/2011/07/riverside.html

Sad, dry state of affairs. The animals are so lucky you put some water out for them.

This is so sad -- I hope that the rain cools & quenches wherever it's needed. Obviously right there in Houston.

Hi, Deanna. Thanks for stopping by my blog. I've been enjoying your blog while hugging the AC, trying to beat the heat. Your textile work is lovely and your experiments from the Jude Hill class are really interesting.
best, nadia

omgoodness. the critters are suffering.
we finally had two days far apart from each other, of 20 minute rain, falling hard. since then big clouds gather but move on........ away.
i have two bird baths, water evaporates every day... and I keep them filled . . . for the feathered amigos!

right now, i'm 'thinking', praying, wishing rain for you and yours. 100 degrees for that many days is, too much hot.
p.s.
a glimmer of blog hope. heard from someone who says they are passing my missing blog issue on to Blogger....
(fingers crossed ;. |

Aww, I have a hard time with the poor wild creatures in the summer. I always kept stoneware crocks around our property when we lived on 9 acres. It got very hot some summers. This year we have had an overabundance of rain, so no issues there. My grandfather always cared for the wild creatures around their home and they raised me off and on during my childhood, so I've continued the tradition. Praying for a break in the weather for you guys soon!!!!

;-) Debi
