the fun has begun...

I think this is my favorite part. Having all the elements and deciding how to put them together. Well, I really don't have them all. There are more beasts to be made but they will mostly be embellishment. I put a thin 48" square cloth on the design wall and I have started playing. After most of the decisions have been made, I will take a picture and remove most of the pieces and start invisible stitching from the center out. This thin background is not THE back, just a way to assemble all the elements. There will be a backing added at the end and maybe a thin, flannel middle layer.

48" thin cloth and begin placement of elements
this will be the center--there will be beasties added here
I'm still experimenting with making black and white sewing thread.

3 strands of floss marked with a permanent marker

And I was thinking that all this magic (Jude's workshop) called for a new pincushion. So I made one last night.

a special pincushion for the Magic Diaries Workshop
Moving along slowly but now it's getting exciting. Any ideas, suggestions, comments are always welcome.

Your Beastie is wonderful! Is it a kitty? I wish I had taken that class, but right now it will have to wait, too much going on as is. I think it is a strange thing that you, Jude and I have all chosen to add a large portion of design in the red or orange family. I had already put aside my orange silks before she even announced her color scheme. I'm very drawn to orange for the last number of years. As a younger person I never liked it at all.

this looks fine deanna, just keep going. the spaces will fill as you go...or you could just make a "ring" of orange blocks around the beast... and do another ring of something else..
i used the marker method once while weaving, fake ikat!

Deanna- This is all very beautiful with those oranges, and I am not a big orange person. I really like your beast and pincushion!

thanks, Nancy. orange is starting to grow on me. not one of my favorite colors.

Deanna dear - How I admire the splendid stitchers. I spent some hours late last night trolling through all your posts way back to mid 1910-only stopped enjoying when exhaustion set in. What wonderful creations, and such a brilliant interactive community. Today I am back to my own work for a rehearsal Monday and Performance Tuesday. I will post about it when it's done.

I like what youre up to with this Deanna, its taking shape nicely now. I really like orange thru to that mellow sunset coppery gold yet they are not shades I would automatically pick up to stitch on or with, odd and I wonder whay that is? Its like rich purples I adore them too, but have the safe colours I go for first. When in fact we should probably push oursleves touse others, challenge ourselves maybe to make more of other colour combinations?
I must learn to experiment more lol
Its a great start and I look forwards to seeing more of your animals!

love the pincushion-selvedges! and your beast w/the weaving behind it. so happy to see all this orange. i made myself a pink and orange quilt a few yrs back. it's moon's favorite color, i didn't like it much, until a friend taught me to see it, she died before she convinced me about yellow. this is going to be a happy cloth!

thanks cindy. yes. i've been trying to convince myself about orange, red and yellow. i'm getting there.

love the pin cushion textures and stitching. It's
already for the magical moments ahead.
i may have missed you saying, but did
you dye the orange pink cloth yourself?
So striking and bright. So right!
Have fun...........

Orange always makes me smile. It's not an easy color though...

deanna7trees said...

your right Deb G. it needs to be toned down with what surrounds it or it dominates.

Looking forward to see what this will evolve into... - rather ingenious, your zebra stripe thread...;)

deanna7trees said...

not my original idea, ger. i saw a you-tube video of something similar a while ago.

I like watching your process, Deanna -- the black & white trim is so perfect, love that, on the beastie piece. The b&w thread is awesome. Isn't orange the color of courage? The pincushion!--love that so much. Now that's the way to get things going, sort of like an amulet or talisman for the magic diaries.

I just found some striped "thread." It's actually baker's string, I think. Don't know if it comes in black & white. It was in the scrapbook section of the craft store.

This cloth will be really beautiful when completed. The elements already are.

it's going to be wonderful...re the black and white thread...have you thought of using one strand black and one strand white together in the needle?

hi Martine. this is just pure fun, not work.

I never would have thought of making my own black and white thread.

I like what has happened with the onion skin.

deanna7trees said...

thanks for your comment Judy. love onion skins for natural dyeing.

wonderful to see your progress! i love all the elements together. i think the combo of bright and delicate colours is awesome! it reminds of what you were saying on my blog about using textiles - i need to rethink what seems to 'go together' in my head! i especially love how the little bits of pink work with the oranges. i think more pink would be good (but then, i usually do!!) xxoo
