finally getting this thing called bobbin lace...

It's taking me a long time to master this craft. I started repeating patterns to help me learn. Repetition usually does it for me. I used a linen thread for this 6" border and did each one in a different color so I wouldn't get bored. I've made 4 little cases that will hold bobbins and lace tools and each one is decorated with a laced edge. They measure about 6" x 4". Click on the images for a closer view.

3 cases made with upholstery scraps and 1 with a moire. all lined with cotton.

the backs of 2 of them

they will hold all kinds of lace tools and bobbins
I'm working on a piece right now with lots of beads. I got carried away with the colors and it looks like something a clown would wear but I'm getting good experience working with the beads and for the first time am able to follow the pattern without too much help. Should be finished with it soon and will post it then.

The bags turned out great! I think you may be right about the repetition. It does help. I had been away from doing lace for 2 weeks and I was pretty frustrated not to be able to remember all the things I was supposed to be doing. Maybe I will do some of the exercises over again.

Congratulations Deanna on mastering the art of bobbing lace. Repetition does it for me too. I like how you use the laces you made. They are all gorgeous. Look forward to see the clown version of bobbin lace soon.

that lace? Tain't nothing you can't do, forget "do"

great! what i like is the lightness of the lace against the heavy fabric. can use some upholstery scraps. i never know what to do with them.

Deanna, these are just beautiful....
Repetition is an important part of learning, I stayed with the same sock pattern forever because I wanted to make sure I really understood what making a sock was about.

deanna7trees said...

thanks, Deb G. repetition sometimes gets boring so i try to vary the color and type of thread i'm using.

Hi Deanna,
thank you for your kind comments about my painting. These bags are wonderful and the lace is exquisite. I am around leaving comments on 'Sew' and enjoying everyones work. Have been doing more drawing and painting than sewing recently.

oh deanna---this is soooo beautiful---

i agree. it seems you can do anything --

i have some tatting my grandmother made---
is lace-making an endangered species ?

deanna7trees said...

thanks, Judy. definitely an endangered species. you don't see many young people doing this anymore.

They are beautiful, Deanna. A good thing to remember about repetition with different colors. There are things I could apply that to, I know. In herbalism, I'm trying to know 40 uses for one herb rather than one use for 40 herbs. Sort of the same. Thanks!
