...morphed into a project envelope

My color catcher sheet project has morphed into a project envelope. I did some fancy stitching, added a zipper and a lining. It measures 10" x 10" so it's a good size to carry around small projects. I love that the texture is very leather like. Here are some photos. Click on the photo for a closer view.

A friend brought me some black walnuts and they are now soaking in water. I hope to dye some of the lighter color catcher sheets and try to make it look like brown leather. I'll keep you posted.

Color catcher sheets...I havent seen those in Australia (will have to keep my eyes open!).

Your little pouch looks wonderful. Great size to keep/carry bits and bobs.

Very clever.

Hi Deanna - this looks great. I am a bit obsessed with little bags- anything as organisers but in particular made out of cloth. I love the lining fabric too. Haha re. walnuts the word verification ofr this today is 'soakella' !!!Gilly

Glad you made used of the color catcher sheets. My friend made a whole quilt for her pets from them. Now you have to give me some hint on walnuts. I have some given to me at Christmas. I know you have to soak them, but what do I do next? Do I have to boil them? Thanks Deanna. Have a good day - Hugs Nat

Deanna...I'm fascinated that you say the colour catchers feel like leather. Would love to touch it....better go out and buy myself some.
My favourite natural dyes so far have been with black walnuts.

Penny,
it's more the visual texture that looks like a fine leather.

Nat,
Here is the website where I got some info. You can also just google "dyeing with black walnuts" for more info.

I only have about 4 large black walnuts in their husks. I wrapped them in some scrim (gauzy fabric) and put them in water. I had to weight them down because they kept floating to the top. Within a very short amount of time, the water was a dark brown. I will leave them for three days and then boil as the instructions say. Can't wait to experiment.

The bags great, love what youve done with your catchers, mine are taking shape and multiplying lol
I suppose black walnuts would be where Walnut Ink is from maybe?
I have some, somewhere.....
Your right though, there is a creasing that takes place that does look like well worn leather, I imagine if we Golden'ed or modge podged it in thin layers, we could achieve the feel too......? Must try to see what happens!

thanks, liniecat. yes, i believe you are right about the walnut ink. good ideas about making it feel more like leather. looking forward in seeing more of your experiments.

this is lovely Deanna. I half remember a technique where if you scrunched up tissue paper and then ironed it the resuilt mimicked leather but I don't remember if you had to coat it with something first?? Sorry!!
