a vintage basket

my grandma taught me to embroider when i was very young. she always had this basket around with embroidery threads, needles and pins. at some point, she gifted it to me so i've had it for about 65 years. i'm not sure how long she had it and until a couple of days ago, i didn't realize that it was probably gifted to her filled with chocolates. on the back of the basket, it says 'Barricini' which is a very well known chocolate company in NY. it measure 9" x 5" x 3"... a perfect size to carry around small projects i'm working on. it's kind of scratchy on the inside so i decided to decorate it with some of the pieces i made in Karen Ruane's class.

grandma's basket measures 9"x5"x3"

Barricini label on back

decorated with lace and embroidered cloth. silk ties added to hold things in place.
pink velvet ribbon around the bottom edge trimmed with stitch

i took advantage of  the holes created from all the circles i cut out from the toile fabric for the funky puffs i showed you last week. you can see them here if you missed that post.

some cross-stitching within the toile that will be part of a new cloth started.
not much else to show right now. wishing you some wonderful days this week. we have had the past 2 days start out in the 40s which is unheard of in May in these parts. we'll be in the 90s in no time which is a bit too hot for my liking but that's the way it is.

Oh Deanna, the basket is beautiful. I just love it! Your grandmother would be so honored. As Els said, I think you have a lot to show! You can have your heat back. It is supposed to hit 90 here tomorrow. That is more of a June temp for us. Wishing you a wonderful rest of the weekend.

I love what you've done with your Grandma's sewing basket. I'm sure she is thrilled that you are putting her treasured basket to use! ;-)

It is unseasonably cold and rainy here. We have had over an inch of rain today already, and they are saying we may have another 1-2" tonight, and more tomorrow. I am wearing a sweater over a t-shirt, jeans, AND a pair of my own hand-knit wool socks as I write this....and this is May 4th in Georgia! YIKES!!

the basket looks so precious and reading it's size it is tiny making it more precious. You have enhanced it beautifully, I love it. I also love the image of the cross stitch on that beautiful cloth...busy, busy!! You must be so happy with the results of your weeks creativity.

Your Grandmother would be so proud! I have my Grandmother's sewing cabinet--one of those with drawers and spindly legs. My Grandfather gave it to her on their first anniversary. Aren't we lucky to have this heritage....

And I just love what you've done with the left over holes. Genius :) Are the letters cross-stitched?

Your lining for your grandmother's basket is delightful! It suits the wonderful smoothed wicker of the outside so well and you've created a real heirloom there!

Absolutely beautiful! and what a sentimental piece. I love to hear stories of girls learning to embroider at their mothers or grandmothers knee, passing along a fine tradition.

Very sweet, if your Grandmother could see how you treasure her basket wouldn't she be glowing with pleasure?
