a new embroidered pouch

and this one is for me. i showed you sections of it in my last post. it's what i've been working on in Karen Ruane's lace class. i finished it today and i'm real pleased with the way it turned out. i filled it with small pieces of white cotton that i always pull out for embroidery and sampling. click on the images for close-ups.

the front is complete

joined to the back with a double ruffle at the bottom
the inside is lined with white cotton lawn and trimmed with lace
the back is a weaving i did in one of Jude Hill's early classes
filled with white cloth and added ties as a closure
Karen Ruane has listed a new class, Simply Stitch, that starts on June 17th. check it out here.

i also did some dyeing this week. a quilting friend had given me 2 pieces of a beautiful silk damask that were part of a blouse. it was a cream color and it dyed beautifully just using oak leaves and  tin cans.

the leaf under the string made the best marking

i'm pleased with the markings on the cloth. this one might get some lace work on it.

i've been spending some time in the garden this week. things are growing quickly since we had some rain this week. the rain water is very magical. i opened my front door the other day and standing right there, not 12" from me was this baby blue jay. he did not move...just stood there while i took his picture and walked around and went back into the house. i opened the door a bit later to check on him but he was gone. will need to sketch this one.

it was 95 degrees today. hope it's cooler where you are. have a great weekend.

I was going to rave about the pouch and then I saw the baby jay! Adorable. The pouch is beautiful, and I don't know which side is my favorite. Both are gorgeous. The dyeing is pretty as well. You have been busy. It is cooler here, finally! We even had some rain. My Sweet Autumn Clematis sprung up a foot after the rain. Rain is magical, especially in the desert. Have a wonderful weekend!

Your white/lace work is always so beautiful and fresh...but I'm thinking that I really love the prints on the woven back!!
Great leaf and little visitor :)

Like Jeannie, I had so much to say until I got to the view of baby bluejay ... stopped dead in tracks at the sight of him [her?]! Such precious young life.

To regroup my thoughts ... beautiful lacework and dye work, deanna. Silk is magic here, with a little help from wise oaks ;>]]

A beautiful bag, Deanna, and I love the blue jay with his big feet! I'm so curious how you'll work the lace into the markings...

Cooler Deanna ... It's freezing, windy and raining and we are going out with friends for the day !!
Anyway enough of that, a massive WOW for both your cloth and your dyed fabric you've got great results with both.
Stay cool while we stay warm.

Lovely pouch! I hope to take one of Karen's classes soon. I love the oak leaf print you made. Just got back from Austin, wonderful weather while I was down there. Planning on moving there.

i've got to tell you, i love the results of your dyeing. when you say just oak leaf and can, do you then put it in water? do you treat the fabric with any fixative?

hope this posts--would love to know the secrets to your consistently wonderful dyeing projects. cloth, can, oak leaf--soaked in water? vinegar? how long do you leave it? i'm sure not getting the same results!

your pouch is truly Stunning Deanna and you are right to be pleased infact pleased seems like a bit of an understatement. I really hope you do apply some of the methods we used in 'lace' to the dyed piece too, it would provide a very interesting surface.

Deanna, everything is so lovely I don't know what to comment on first! Your pouch is simply gorgeous, I love the way you finished the back and your edgings. Is that a shisha mirror , too? Karen's Simply Stitch class will be so informative and fun. I love the way she wrote " a gentle gathering" Her classes are always low pressure. You must be so excited about your dyed fabric! You can really see your pattern with the leaves. Beautiful! Will be lovely to see what you create with it. Your garden sounds so peaceful.

Love the woven patchwork backing and the whitework is delightful. A lovely idea to marry the two together like that.

The pouch is exquisite. You do such beautiful handwork, Deanna. Spectacular results on the dyeing! Lace will be just beautiful on it and I can't wait to see how it goes.

Love it all! I'm really excited about dyeing right now. I think I find it easier when I can set up more outside, when it's warmer...that would be 60 degrees today. :)

the pouch is wonderful and the marks on the eco-dyed cloth are fabulous...can't wait to see the direction that cloth takes.

The white work is lovely and the weaving on the back really complements it with its gentle colours. I love the eco dyeing too - the lines of the string over the leaf print are fabulous!

Your pouch is great Deanna ... and thanks for the comment regarding the white embroidery thread.... I must call the shop to see if they have some. I was so excited to find it after all this time I wasn't even thinking clearly and didn't really remember what colour Karen had said..... but, definitely want some more colours of whites and off whites.... and perhaps some others as well... maybe I'll just drive back out there ...it's not too far... pack a lunch distance though...hahhaha or at least a snack....
