having dyeing withdrawals...

i hadn't dyed any cloth since getting my new stove. it's been a few weeks and i was anxious to try a rusty grid that was sent to me by a blogging friend. so i just did one small piece. i left it in the water too long but still got a result i'm happy with. click on the images for close-ups of the cloth.

the grid markings just showed up on one side. the white lines are from the fabric tying the bundle.

i love the weave of this cloth. it's a silk/linen combination
also doing a bit of experimenting with embroidery...not quite there yet. this was inspired by one of Karen's posts here.

and you might remember Judes' Magic Feather Project. Jude is working on the first quilt and is now collecting stitched stones to "balance the lightness of the sky and feathers". if you would like to stitch a few stones, all the information is here. i mailed my stones this morning.

just stitched to a piece of paper for mailing
wishing you all a good weekend and a happy mother's day.

I'm working on my stones today. Probably won't get them posted until Monday. I glad you have irregular stones. I was trying to get mine perfect and well - nothing perfect in life! the cloth has a lot of character - rich color and form. I tried dyeing a rusted saw blade without getting (again) perfect results but they still look wonderful. the stitching for karen is really fine - i can see you carrying this into some future garment. cheers to you this weekend. rain and coolish here. good day for quiet stitching and tea (if i ever get a rocking chair i'll really be in trouble!)

Grass doesn't have time to grow under your busy feet (and hands)--the stones are wonderful. What a great idea to stitch 'em to paper. The embroidery "portals" ar simply brilliant.

love this post Deanna. The gridded dying is fabulous and your little wheels look great. I saw Jude's post on the stones and thought it was a fantastic idea, I love the softness of them

I love the dye results! I have a found grid that I've been meaning to use. Mmmm....gotta do that! And your rainbow of rocks are delightful. Thank you for the link to Karen's beautiful piece (I'd missed it).
Have a great day today :)

Those stones are great - love the deep brown, color of the stones, and their natural shape. You are just too fast for words. The new dyed fabric is great!

Fascinating to see other people playing with Karen's ideas, and bringing their own design sensibility to it. Well done!

Deanna, the grid's pattern came through nicely, that is going to be a handy piece to have around for future dye-pots, I bet. I love your stones all ready to fly off to NY. And your embroidery reminds me that a hole in cloth can be beautified! It's wonderful. xo
