garden pickings for dyeing and...

i enjoyed being able to go to the garden for some cloth dyeing leaves and flowers. wasn't sure what would work so i tried a little of bit of quite a few plants. click on the images for close-ups.

lambs ear, basil, petunias, and more

stainless steel pot filled with rain water

and the results. some cloth wrapped around a tin can and some around a copper pipe.

all the cloth is part silk. this last one was wrapped around the tin can with a wide rubber band and some of the rubber is stuck to the cloth from being out in the sun. it has been washed but will still need some rubbing to get it all off. none of the leaves or flowers left any kind of detailed impression.

and i have started working on the back of my jacket. i'll start stitching on it tonight.

hand dyed silk, a crochet sample i did a while ago with some embroidery.

I love the colors you are using for your jacket. So rich and beautiful. I try not to get disappointed when plants don't leave their marks, but it can be frustrating. Then there are the days when the dye Goddess smiles upon you and there are leaf shadows and color changes.

i commented on the forum about the "stitching" part - i'm really looking forward to your progress. how long did you leave the bundle - maybe more time? i'm just thinking out loud, really without any real authority...having said that though, i'd be please with the results. i've been told that petunias make a nice "color" and i did some roses last year. i liked it wet better since when it dried in came out too pink for me. but it's fun to try even if not completely what you think it's going to turn out as...

Great results from your garden Deanna. The jacket piece looks like a fun project too. Enjoy...

There are so many variations possible with the fabric and plant material, I suppose it's too much to expect they will all be equally clear.

Great dye results, as usual. I always like how things turn out, as I am not picky (except my own mud looking stuff!!!)
It's very nice to see your jacket, such an inviting start! I wonder what else you will add?! I hope you continue to share it :)

beautiful marks and subtle color variations in your dye fabrics and love what you're doing with the shirt, will be fun to see how this evolves.

I love these --such interesting colors and patterns. Do you have plans for using them?

thanks, ali. i don't usually dye with a particular project in mind but use them as the situation arises. i do plan to eventually make a blanket with lots of the pieces. i just enjoy the dyeing part and all the surprises it brings.

the top image of the dyed cloth is amazing....love the 'tendril' like impressions coming out from the right. Your piece for the jacket back is such a beautiful mix of shades....

Wow! I love these. I've been trying to get the same kind of results on paper, with no luck. But these would make lovely prim rabbits , or cloth bindings for ancient books.

Your dyed fabrics are fabulous. I love the yellows and your soft browns.
I really must get serious about dyeing. My black bean dyeing experiment awarded me with soft lavender color...the kind you would get if you had a purple sock mixed with your white laundry. ;)
