an upcoming fashion designer who recycles...

and in her own words:

"If I were poor I would design my clothing out of garbage bags that people have thrown away. My feet would hurt in garbage bag shoes but I would manage. " Skye

made with a white trash bag

Skye is 7½ years old

Not much dyeing going on here since my stove went out and I'm waiting for the new one to be installed sometime next week. These 2 pieces were done on cotton, soaked in soy milk. Cotton just doesn't give me the same results as silk.

cotton bundle around copper pipe

I used oak leaves from the dye bath that turned black from iron in the water in this bundle that was wrapped around a very rusty tin can.

oak leaf impressions where the cloth did not touch the tin can

nothing dramatic

but there is a partially hidden face here

Starting early, she might have to use garbage bags if the planet climate and economics keep going the way they are heading.

well you have to know I LOVE the oak leaf cloth. very beautiful. even though it may not be silk the results are still good in my book. I don't know if you get or have access to the New York Times, but in today's home section they did a piece on home grown dyes...things from the garden kind of stuff. i've not read it yet since i was at mom's all day get stuff done around there but you might want to find the article on-line if you are interested...and cheers to the future generation.

skye is great! especially love her head-wear. i actually love the "nothing dramatic" piece. it looks like pages waiting for a story. still fondling this beautiful silk over here.

Skye seems just like her name--airy and alive. I see the half hidden face...pale like a ghost presence. What can I say---you just do get some effective results with the dark dyes and your method. You could try some cold soaking methods in the sun if you get itchy to dye before the stove arrives. But, I'm sure you have plenty to do without dyeing. Full moon tomorrow night here! There?

Skye is certainly starting young - and why not? She'll have already developed her own visual language by the time her contemporaries are just beginning to look properly!

Nothing dramatic... I really like that piece too. Full of possibility. :) And Skye, she is just wonderful!

Skye really has the future !!!
(what a lovely red head ! takes me a lot of henna to become like that !)
Eco-dyeing is fun (but sometimes a bit disappointing .... for me more so than not)

tell skye that i agree with her, the plastic bag shoes would hurt...but maybe she could use junk mail to pad them??

Deanna, there is most definitely part of a face there and I have a hunch you'll do something cool with it. Skye is a pretty smart girl -- how refreshing!
