knitting and bobbin lace...

i was in a hurry to finish this knitted scarf i started last month so i could start on my next big knitting project. i didn't think i'd tackle another knitted lace project after the shawl i did last year, but this one was quite easy and has given me more confidence with lace knitting where you have to really focus on following a chart as each line is different to achieve the pattern.

click on the images for close-ups.

a linen, mohair yarn with a bit of nylon for strength.

my next knitting project will be a coat that i found in the new Downton Abbey knitting magazine. i have purchased all the yarn and am ready to begin. i just hope i'm able to see this project through to the end. i'm thinking i'd better set myself a weekly goal on this one.

the yarn color is 'berries' and is 100% wool.

i've been working on bobbin lace leaves in my weekly lace class and decided to use some of them to make a little needle case. the thread is very slick and silky. it was left to me by my grandmother so it is quite old but in very good condition. i have lots of it and hope to do some crocheted pieces with it as well as more bobbin lace.

working on a needle lace book. the leaves are bobbin lace, stitched down to the cotton cloth. the edging, not yet complete is done in crochet work.

we have been blessed with quite a bit of rain these past 2 weeks...too much in some areas, but still not in the right place to raise the lake levels which are still quite low. the trees are still loaded with leaves and some of the plants think it's Spring instead of Autumn. hope you are all enjoying your weekend.

The lace in cranberry color is beautiful! I use to have a similar scarf from Estonia; such knitting was/is a skill of the Haapsalu women. There was a saying that they could knit a shoulder scarf thin enough to pull it through their wedding ring. They used natural white wool; it is refreshing to see a very similar pattern in this most beautiful red.

What a lovely lovely scarf....and the coat pattern...Oooo, Step aside Dame Edith! Well, when the leaves finally drop, and the rain clears, I see you knitting through winter to Spring. Maybe the plants will catch up.

Your scarf is gorgeous. And the yarn for the coat had me drooling. I love that deep, rich color. You bobbin leaves and the crochet edging are beautiful. I have yet to garner the courage to try lace - knitting or weaving. Following charts isn't my strong suit. Yet, I love the look. Maybe I'll look for some crochet patterns. Late fall/early winter here and I am not liking the dark descending at 4. I know it is going to get worse before the light returns. I guess this makes us all appreciate the long June days all the more. Have a wonderful weekend and I'll keep you on task with the coat. LOL!

lovely scarf and well the coat is going to be beautiful, a big big challenge for you. The thread for your bobbin lace and crochet looks very slippy, I imagine not easy to work with but the end result I am sure will be well worth it.
Like you the trees are holding their leaves here and I have had bulbs coming up that should not appear till spring and also a late gladioli has appeared I am sure it will not flower

Deanna your scarf is absolutely exquisite, I love the colour and the pattern. I should get some courage and try one of those very difficult patterns as well. You are leading the way!
The bobbin lace had my heart melting....

the coat will be fabulous Deanna, I love it and the scarf looks so soft.....
I love your Gramdmother's thread too...creating a piece with memory attached. Right up my street!

Wow! Just gorgeous Deanna. I have some yarn about that same color to make a shawl, the one with beads that was in a recent magazine. I am sort of afraid to start. Meanwhile I am working on a blue one--plain with holes. I love the leaves. Would like to see a close up? No rain here. Getting dry again.

The shawl & lace leaves turned out beautifully. And I really like the coat pattern/yarn. I can't wear wool, but I do love the look of it.
Hot and dry here...still.

Deanna, I love this post -- the lace scarf is beautiful, I love the color. And that traveling coat!!! It's going to be fabulous. I need to find that magazine ASAP.
Working with your grandmother's threads seems like the most connecting, soulful handwork of all.

I love that coat - I haven't heard of the Downtown Abbey knitting magazine but will have a look for it - good luck with your daily plan. I also find that the best way to get big projects done.
I am always so inspired by what you set for yourself, and the techniques you explore Deanna!

What a lovely scarf! I knit one very similar to it in chartreuse a couple of years back, and I wear it a lot. It's just so soft and, actually, warm!
Good luck with the coat! One of my knitting friends knit herself a coat a couple of years ago. She is quite tall and thin....looks great on her, but I don't know that I'd ever finish one! Yes, you are right, it's another thing you should put on a schedule.

I look forward to watching your progress...and I'm going to have to look for that magazine!
